It’s a busy time at Porterhouse, with many of our teams travelling regularly for client projects and to attend key events. Work-related travel should be an exciting and enriching experience, so to help ensure your trip runs smoothly, here are some common-sense tips from the team 😊
Plan Ahead
Double-check your itinerary, hotel details, and meeting schedules before departure. A little prep can prevent a lot of stress.
“I like to know my passport is current in case of last-minute travel opportunities and always pack it first in a place that’s easy to locate.”
If you have a hotel or flight preference, please ask for this to be booked by our travel provider. You do not have to take the first option offered if you’d prefer to stay elsewhere or fly at a different time.
If flying, make sure to set-up a reward account (e.g. BA executive club, Virgin flying club) and add this number to your flight booking in advance to collect points for future flights, lounge use etc.
Money
Ask your account lead for a company credit card to take with you, and set-up a mobile app-based current account that can be used abroad (i.e. Monzo, Revolut) in case of emergency.
Pack Smart
Stick to the essentials, and if you’re flying, keep anything critical (like chargers, driving licences or passports) in your carry-on.
“Keep your laptop and charger in your carry-on rather than your check-in bag.”
Stay Connected
Make sure your devices are charged, and don’t forget any international adapters if you’re heading abroad. There are adapters available in the Reading and Nottingham offices.
Meeting up with teammates makes working more enjoyable – Do request rooms next to your colleagues and share mobile numbers etc. so it’s easier to connect and meetup.
Take Care of Yourself
Hydrate, try to get enough rest and be sure to eat as much as possible whenever you can.
It can be helpful to practice self-care – whether it’s through mindfulness, music, journaling, breathing exercises – whatever works for you.
If you do have any concerns always reach out for support from your line manager or team.
Choosing your accommodation
Ask to stay in well-reviewed hotels in central areas, with an onsite restaurant and room service – just in case you get delayed or feel uncomfortable eating out alone.
“Consider asking for rooms next to your colleagues and exchange numbers to make it easier to connect.”
Eating out
It’s good to ask colleagues or the hotel for recommendations on affordable, well-reviewed restaurants and always keep an eye on your personal items.
Getting about
Use trusted transportation services (e.g. hotel-arranged taxis or recognised rideshare apps). Avoid travelling alone late at night where possible and always share your trip details with someone you trust.
Enjoy the journey and destination
Many of our meetings and congresses are in amazing locations. If time allows, take a walk, explore a bit, or enjoy a local meal. Travelling for work doesn’t have to be just about work.
We want every member of our team to feel supported – wherever work may take you.
If you have additional suggestions or resources that have helped you during your travels, please feel free to share them.
Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like any more information on any of the points above. Safe travels!
