In late 1846, a dentist from New England, William TG Morton, is attributed to have performed a dental extraction using diethyl ether as a general anaesthetic. While there was much subsequent debate around who pioneered the birth of modern anaesthesia, what is undeniable is the speed with which the practice spread among the medical profession and the impact it had on medicine.1

World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day is an initiative of the MS International Federation that is marked on 30 May every year. The 2018 campaign called #bringinguscloser focuses on research and connecting those affected by MS to those involved in researching it

It is with great pleasure that Porterhouse Medical announces that Amanda Lyons has been promoted to senior account director, working across European and UK teams in scientific and medical communications.  

At Porterhouse Medical, we are passionate about the work we do with our partners to help improve people’s lives, which includes using our communications expertise to help raise awareness of disease symptoms as well as making regular donations to charity.

World Ovarian Cancer Day is the initiative of the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition (WOCC) and occurs every year on 8 May. The objective of the day is to raise awareness, funding and support for all of the women around the world living with ovarian cancer, along with their families and patient support organisations.

On the last day of February each year, countries worldwide take part in Rare Disease Day to raise awareness of a diverse group of disorders that affect fewer than 1 in 2,000 people in Europe or fewer than 200,000 people in the USA.

Each year, Porterhouse Medical chooses a local charity to support as a key part of our mission to improve people’s lives. In 2017, we partnered up with SportsAble, an organisation that supports people with disabilities through sports and social activities (www.sportsable.co.uk). We raised a total of £2,544 through numerous events, such as a team-building day at the centre run by SportsAble in Maidenhead, and the SportsAble Static Wheelchair Push Challenge at our offices in Reading. This year, we are proud to announce that we will be raising funds for another admirable local charity: The Willows Support Group.

Every year on 4 February the global population unites for World Cancer Day, with the aim of highlighting that millions of potentially avoidable deaths occur each year as a result of cancer. More than a third of cases could be prevented by adopting healthier behaviours; therefore, World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to spread this message and raise the profile of cancer within the global media.

As part of the Porterhouse Medical Group’s mission to help improve people’s lives, we use our communications expertise to raise awareness of diseases, and participate in many fund-raising activities for charity. We also adopt a local charity to fundraise for each year. Last year, we had an enjoyable and often energetic time supporting SportsAble.

We are delighted to announce that Nina Bull has been named the Porterhouse Entrepreneur of the Year 2017, with the overall best entry in the Porterhouse Entrepreneur Award competition last year.
