Scientific Director

Job description

We are currently looking for a scientific director to support our UK business. The successful candidate will be a confident and dynamic individual who has the necessary skills to lead projects from a scientific, editorial and strategic perspective. As well as exceptional writing ability, the scientific services director must demonstrate sound scientific knowledge and understanding, keen business acumen, an ability to think creatively and a talent for getting the best out of people.

Key duties will include:

  • Providing high-level scientific, editorial and strategic counsel to pharmaceutical clients
  • Confidently leading scientific discussions in client meetings / teleconferences and engaging external experts in high-level scientific and medical discussions
  • Working in partnership with the client services team to ensure client expectations are achieved
  • Providing strategic direction to team members and other colleagues, based on commercial needs of the business and thorough understanding of clients’ needs and objectives
  • Developing and maintaining expert knowledge in specific therapy areas as directed
  • Managing the delivery of a range of high-quality medical communications materials, including publications, slide decks, training materials, meeting reports, websites and apps
  • Leading and managing the scientific services team to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget
  • Ensuring maintenance of high editorial standards through review of other writers’ work
  • Identifying opportunities for new business within existing accounts and supporting new business initiatives, including attendance and presentation at pitch meetings
  • Being responsible for the recruitment, training and development of members of the scientific services team

Desired background and skills

  • A strong scientific background, ideally with a PhD and/or MSc
  • Several years’ experience as a senior medical writer or scientific team lead in a medical communications agency
  • Experience of leading high-performing teams, and proven leadership and influencing skills in a commercial environment
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills, as well as a full understanding of industry regulations and guidelines underpinning medical communications activities
